Dunfermline substitute Ross Campbell smashed home an 89th minute equaliser to deny Morton their first league win of the season in a 1-1 draw.
The Greenock side withstood a barrage of early pressure and were fortunate not to go behind when Graham Bayne saw his effort headed off the line after a mistake by goalkeeper Kevin Cuthbert.
The home side might have gone in front after 17 minutes but winger Jim McAlister's shot crashed into the side netting after Iain Russell and Brian Wake had combined to create an opening.
Three minutes later Athletic goalkeeper Paul Gallacher produced a fabulous double save when he first he blocked a long-range effort from McAlister and, as Wake followed up, he recovered to somehow push the striker's eight-yard effort over the bar.
Morton thought they had taken the lead after 59 minutes when Steve Masterton's corner from the left crashed off the crossbar and post and appeared to be over the line, but despite vehement protests, referee Steve Nicholls waved play on.
However the home side were not to be denied 60 seconds later when Brian Wake hooked the ball in from a yard out after Dominic Shimmin got his head to anther Masterton corner from the right.
However Morton failed to hold onto their lead as Campbell got on the end of a Stephen Glass corner to level from close range in the closing stages.
