St Johnstone secured the First Division title with a fine 3-1 win at McDiarmid Park, to end a seven-year absence from Scotland's top flight.
The home side started brightly as they looked for the three points that would guarantee top spot and Collin Samuel had a great chance to open the scoring after a Martin Hardie knock-down, but the striker could only fire wide.
Morton looked dangerous on the break, though, and they were awarded a penalty in the 24th minute.
As a floated corner came in, referee Steven Nicholls pointed to the spot after spotting a push in the box.
Ryan McGuffie stepped up to send Alan Main the wrong way and stun the home faithful.
The lead was shortlived, however, as just five minutes later a Paul Sheerin corner was eventually knocked into the net by Martin Hardie after a scramble in the box.
Buoyed by their equaliser, the home side picked up the pace and Samuel had two great chances to give Saints the lead, the second of which came crashing off the post.
And the woodwork came to the visitors` rescue once again when Chris Millar crashed a powerful drive off the post within a minute of the restart.
Morton's relief was only shortlived as Saints kept the high tempo going and a delightful flick from Hardie sent Steven Milne through on goal and his curling shot beat the goalkeeper.
Morton hit back quickly and a Kevin Finlayson corner caused panic in the Saints box only for the home side to scramble the ball clear.
Samuel then had another chance after a powerful run down the right but his shot once again went narrowly wide.
The hosts continued to pile the pressure on Morton and Milne came close to extending Saints` lead but his diving header following Samuel's cross sneaked just past the post.
Derek Holmes replaced Samuel in the 70th minute and the big centre forward could have made it 3-1 but he shot straight at Kevin Cuthbert from just inside the box.
It was all one-way traffic with the clock running down and Milne capped a fine performance by blasting an unstoppable half-volley into the net in the 79th minute to erase any remaining nerves in the home support and kick-start the celebrations.
