Chris Templeman scored his first goal for East Fife to secure a 1-0 away victory over a determined Arbroath.
The match was competitive with East Fife's added composure in front of goal the only difference between the two sides.
Bobby Linn had the first opportunity for the away side when Robbie Raeside failed to deal with a long ball but the young striker's shot was weak and straight at the keeper.
East Fife opened the scoring in the 36th minute when Kevin Fotheringham delivered a great free-kick that Templeman headed into the back of the net.
Arbroath battled back in the second half and had the better of the chances with Craig Tully guilty of missing a clear opportunity when his free header sailed over the bar.
Substitute Bryan Scott should have put Fife level but was desperately unlucky to see his header cannon off the bar late on.
