Stenhousemuir moved to the top of the Third Division with a hard-fought 1-0 win over previous table-toppers Cowdenbeath.

The Fifers were the better side in the first half and John Gemmell had the ball in the net after eight minutes but his effort was disallowed for offside.

Cowdenbeath continued to press and were almost rewarded for their efforts when Brian Fairbairn crashed a shot off the crossbar from 25 yards.

Stenhousemuir came more into the game in the second half but it was still the visitors who created the better chances and Gemmell was unlucky to see an effort deflected wide of the post.

With time running out the home side snatched all three points when Iain Thomson crossed from the right and picked out Kevin Motion who drilled home from close range.
